Contemporary research concerning management results, including surgical treatment, are based upon reliable tools constructed to measure the quality of life. Free use of these tools is determined by certain restrictions, such as the need for assessing the adequacy of a particular questionnaire to measure what it is ment to measure, in a particular group of patients, during particular sociological circumstances. The adaptation of foreign language questionnaires restricted to translation only stands in conflict with basic rules of psychological methodology and does not ensure results to be true. Aim of the study was to evaluate the adequacy of FACIT-Pa questionnaire in measuring the quality of life in chronic pancreatitis patients under Polish conditions. Material and methods. The study comprised 200 questionnaires completed by patients treated and followed-up in the Department of General, Gastroenterological and Endocrinological Surgery, Medical Univ. of Gdansk, between January 2000 and July 2002. Study analysis included confirmatory factor analysis and MANOVA (Multiple Analysis of Variances) performed by SAS software. Results. Analysis confirmed the high accuracy and reliablility of FACIT-Pa in chronic pancreatitis patients in the Polish population. Conclusion. FACIT-Pa can be used during quality of life evaluation in chronic pancreatitis patients in the Polish population.
